Blue whales migrate to the waters off Portland to feed on the abundant swarms of krill which are nourished by the Bonney Upwelling, a marine phenomenon in which cold nutrient-rich water is brought to the surface from deeper in the ocean. Blue whales rarely approach land very closely but their blows and backs can sometimes be seen at a distance off prominent headlands such as Cape Nelson and Cape Bridgewater. Portland Upwelling Festival!

This epic natural phenomenon occurs off the coast of Portland when the spring winds shift to the south-east, driving a change in ocean currents that powers a seven month feeding frenzy (November to May) of tuna, crayfish, giant crabs, squid, fish, seabirds, krill and blue whales. An incredibly rich ecological food web, the Upwelling is at its greatest off the coast of Portland and is the cornerstone of our lucrative local fishing and tourism industry. Blue whales are the signature species of the Upwelling and Portland is the only land-based blue whale watching area in Australia. . The Portland Upwelling Festival will run for one day only and be free for everyone to attend. This allows all Portland residents to participate in this unique local celebration.

HMB Endeavour

The magnificent HMB Endeavour is a sea-going vessel, but in port transforms into a 'floating museum', accurately representing what a sailor's life was really like - presented as if James Cook and his crew just disembarked during their epic 1768-71 world voyage when they crossed the Pacific, circumnavigated New Zealand and explored the east coast of Australia. Visitors will see the Mess Deck set for a meal, Joseph Banks' botanical specimens in the Great Cabin and Cook's private cabin just as it would have appeared all those years ago.

Heywood Wood Wine and Roses festival

GET ready for 12 hours of jam packed entertainment for the 19thannual Heywood Wood Wine and Roses festival next month. Festival organisers are gearing up for what is set to be the biggest event yet with more than 45 entertainers and 100 stallholders booked for the Saturday, February 25 event. Event coordinator Ross Barclay has been busy with the committee booking some of the biggest names ever seen in the event’s history, headlined by the Britney Spears and Lady Gaga Tribute Show. Joining the stage is top Melbourne band Kartoon, country group Prarie Oysters, African dance and drumming group African Star, plus Polynesian Magic featuring dancers from Hawaii, Tahiti and the Cook Islands. “We have booked an exciting line-up for this year’s event. There will be something for everyone,” Mr Barclay said. “We are really pleased to have the Britney Spears and Lady Gaga Tribute show – it’s set to be a highlight of the evening with top Melbourne band Kartoon, who are well loved by the Heywood crowd.” Festivities begin on Friday, February 24 with the popular Breakfast in the Streethosted by the Heywood Consolidated School. The breakfast will include the Australian Fair Organ, a travelling concert organ. It has the equivalent sound of a 20-piece band and is the only travelling concert organ in the country. The festival has focused a lot of attention on attracting the best children’s entertainment.

First Cruise Ship to Visit Portland

Australias classic liner, Athena, will be the first-ever cruise ship to visit the Victorian town of Portland – Australias newest cruise destination - as part of Classic International Cruises newly released 2012/13 summer cruise program, which will also feature a return season in Adelaide, the cruise lines first Easter cruise in Australia and a new rock n roll cruise. Athenas inaugural visit to Portland in western Victoria on February 5, 2013, will form part of a new five night round trip itinerary from Adelaide which also includes visits to Melbourne and the South Australian town of Robe where the 550 pasenger Athena will be only the second cruise ship to anchor off the Limestone Coast town, following a call by the smaller 106 passenger Orion in November, 2010. The oldest European settlement in Victoria and once home to Australia’s first saint, Mary Mackillop, Portland is close to the historic fishing village of Port Fairy and famous Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road. And Robe is close to the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves.

Extra Extra Read All About It! The Easter Bunny has visited Quest Portland for the 2nd year in a row and has brought joy (and Easter Eggs) to children of all ages. It was a morning like any other when families made their way down to the Quest Portland reception area after hearing of tales that the Easter Bunny would be coming. Children were assisted in the colouring and making of Easter Egg baskets by Quest staff and shortly after the hunt was on. All children found a number of eggs, bunnies and soft toys.
