Located in Victoria just West of Melbourne and Port Philip Bay, the Great Ocean Road is a 241 kilometres long stretch of coastal road along Bass Straight and the Southern Ocean. The road has two lanes that follow the winding shapes of the coast. The Great Ocean Road starts in Torquay and ends in Allansford, and the landscapes it goes through include dramatic cliffs, rainforests, beautiful surf beaches and amazing rock formations.
Something a lot of people who drive down this stunning stretch of road may not know or realise, is that it is the world's largest war memorial which was built by soldiers returning from World War I, and is dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives during the war.
Regularly voted as one of the best road trips in the world, the Great Ocean Road is considered by many as a major item on their bucket list of places to visit. Beginning just about an hour drive out of Melbourne, in the seaside town of Torquay, and finishing near Warrnambool, it can be driven down in a day but is best enjoyed over two or three days.
Highlights along the road include watching surfers battle the waves at the iconic Bells Beach, koala spotting on the way to the Cape Otway Lighthouse, watching the sun set behind the majestic limestone rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles, and whale spotting off the beach at Warrnambool during the winter months.
Driving down the Great Ocean Road is a wonderful experience you certainly won't forget.
