Quest Goulburn is located right in the heart of town, an easy walk from shops, restaurants and bars. Our 63 generously-appointed apartments in studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations, are modern and light-filled, and the team can point you in the direction of all the town’s hidden gems.
Goulburn’s most iconic landmark is so much more than just a gift shop – The Big Merino is a tribute to the local wool industry. With free entry, visitors can brush up on 200 years of Australian wool, thanks to a permanent exhibition, before taking a trip to the top of the structure to view the town through the eyes of the big ram himself. And while it is more than just a gift shop, it’s still a gift shop worth perusing, with Ugg boots, merino possum knitwear and raw local wool for spinning.
Follow your nose to The Pavilion Cafe, around a 10 minute walk from Quest Goulburn. It’s a breezy spot serving delectable brekkie options by day and woodfired pizzas by night. Be sure to try the breakfast bruschetta with fresh tomato, pesto, poached eggs, bacon and hollandaise on sourdough or the churro-style French toast, smothered in salted caramel and served with strawberries and ice cream.
A bracing bowl of steamy Pho at Noi Goulburn – a buzzy Vietnamese restaurant – is the ideal lunch. Owned by the Khoo-Nguyễn family, who want to “share the beauty of our cultures with the community, in a region we call home”, the eatery is a beautiful example of the changing landscape of food in country towns across Australia.
Goulburn Regional Art Gallery is committed to the community, hosting workshops and learning opportunities on a regular schedule. A rotating program of exhibitions joins the gallery’s permanent collected works, with a range of First Nations art on display; Sharon Adamson, Danie Mellor, Anyupa Stevens, Serena Bonson, Eubena Nampitjin, Dean Cross, Alison Puruntatameri and Kenan Namunjdja are just a few artists whose work you’ll encounter.
With a grand Victorian facade and the kind of laid back country welcome that makes you want to order another round just to soak in the ambience, the Southern Railway Hotel is a classic all-rounder for dinner. Expect pub meals with an upmarket twist – fish and chips is made using wild kingfish, and the surprise inclusion of a crispy-skinned duck breast with celeriac puree on the menu lets you know you’re in good gastronomic hands.
Head out to Bungonia National Park, a natural wonder of hiking trails and picnic spots fringed with gum trees and dramatic sandstone and limestone outcroppings. A must-see stop within the park is Adams Lookout – it has a platform within easy bushwalking distance, offering spectacular views out across the cliffs of Bungonia Creek Gorge and Slot Canyon.
The Southern Tablelands is an emerging terroir for extraordinary cool climate wines, and there’s no better introduction than the offerings of Lerida Estate at Collector, around half-an-hour’s drive southwest of Goulburn. For something really special, pick a bottle of the 2019 Shiraz Viognier, but don’t take our word for it – book in a tasting and let your tastebuds make the decision.
